Aion: The Tower of Eternity is an MMORPG in development by the MMO powerhouse company, NCSoft. The general storyline of the game chronicles the fight between the Elyos, Asmodians, and Balaur. The more specific storyline goes something like this...
At one time, the world was whole, held together by the sacred Tower of Eternity, until a great catastrophe destroyed the Tower, and the world was split into two. The ancient Balaur race was awoken from their exilement in The Abyss and waged war upon the world. You choose who you align yourself with. And with those choices, the world will change. You are in control.
- A Vertical World
What makes this world so special and different, is the application of the vertical dimension. Since the players have wings and can fly freely throughout the world, creating that extra dimension that no other MMO has, is important. Would the gameplay be truely different if the map was still horizontal like all other games out there? Even if you could fly, it would be extremely similar. The rush of flying in the air with your wings would diminish pretty quickly after you realize, walking is just as acceptable. Since the world is split into two worlds, one below, and one above, the player must use their wings to get to high up places, or swoop down lower. The Abyss rests in the middle with floatng dungeons for instances, quests, PvP battles, PvPvE battles, etc.
- An Evolving World
So yay, we can fly with wings in a vertical world. Big whoop. Is that the only thing special about the environment? Of course not. The coolest part of the environment isn't the fact you can fly, but because it can change. I went into a few details in the General Overview about this exciting aspect of the game. I don't mean to keep using Jang as a tool to explain the details of the game to you, but he will be able to put things clearer than I could.
Not much is known about the Elyos, however we do know that they inhabit the upper part of the world and are more "angelic".
Not much is known about the Asomdians, however we do know that they inhabit the lower part of the world and are more "demonic".
Wizards are casters who's duties are huge damage and crowd control. Aion videos show them performing effective knockback spells to keep enemies at a distance, which helps because of their low HP. We've mainly seen Wizards using staves so far, and from their skill lists, they use weapons called "spellbooks".
Elementalists are meant to be a summoner class and their role is that of support, mostly. They are a caster class that seems to rely on their pets to give them a higher rate than their "cousin", the Wizard.
Rangers are a versatile combat class, as they can be effective from range with their bow, or because of their high evasion and dual wielding ability, at melee range. Dual wielding swords and bows are their weapons of choice.
Assassins seem to follow the traditional MMO Assassin as the sneak attack, melee specialist. Positioning seems to be an important part in the way you perform their special moves.
Fighters are a melee class with a diverse set of melee skills, making them good damage dealers with good survivability. They can perform the duties of an off tank, or a DPS like class.
Knights are the defensive fighter whose main job is to be the tank. With the highest HP and the highest survivability, their job is to keep all the enemies on them, so the damage dealers can do their thing.
Priests are healers with a tad bit more damager capabilities than the traditional healer. They can wear heavier armor and their decent damage output makes them a bit more survivable at solo combat than one might think. We are guessing that they can use swords, and probably staves.
Clerics are meant to be a support class, providing nearby allies with buffs and a boast of morale. This is a veristile hybird class for people who want to able to heal and buff, but also survive on their own.
Spear of the Wind - Level 1
Gathers the force of the wind and throws and magical spear to the enemy. If the spell is successful, you may then cast Flame Explosion. Refresh time: 4 seconds. MP consumption: 50. Usable with spellbooks.
Flame Explosion - Level 1
Causes the enemy’s wounds to explode causing damage and knocking the enemy over. Skill is only available after successfully casting Spear of the Wind. Refresh time: 15 seconds. MP consumption: 200. Usable with spellbooks.
Fragments of Fire - Level 1
Hurls fragments of fire at the enemy. Refresh time: 2 seconds. MP consumption: 100. Usable with spellbooks.
Wave of Fire - Level 1
Throws a wave of fire at the enemy causing lots of damage. Refresh time: 30 seconds. MP consumption: 350. Usable with spellbooks.
Call Lightning - Level 1
Attacks the enemy with a bolt of lightning. Refresh time: 10 seconds. MP consumption: 100. Usable with spellbooks.
Whirlwind - Level 1
Attacks the enemy and its surrounding enemies with a whirlwind spell attack. The movement speed of the enemies affect is also reduced. Refresh time: 40 seconds. MP consumption: 400. Usable with spellbooks.
Power of Meditation - Level 1
Temporarily increases the caster’s MP recovery rate. Refresh time: 120 seconds. MP consumption: 150. Usable with spellbooks.
Power of Protection - Level 1
Temporarily increases the target’s physical defense and decreases the damage received from monsters.. Refresh time: 120 seconds. MP consumption: 150. Usable with spellbooks.
Shock Wave - Level 1
Uses a weak shockwave to push back the enemy. Refresh time: 15 seconds. MP consumption: 50. Usable with spellbooks.
Divine Power Explosion - Level 4
Gather the energy of the divine light and destroy all enemies around you. All DP will be consumed. Refresh time: 60 seconds.
Deliver Divine Power - Level 1
Deliver your divine energy to another player(unsure of definiton). Refresh time: 10 seconds.
Robe Mastery - Level 1
As your class is able to equip robe armor types, the defense increases when the skill level increases.
Magic Weapon Mastery - Level 1
The magic/physical attack power increases as the skill level increases.
Latent Force - Level 1
Awake the dormant abilities. Depending on the skill level you will gain extra HP, physical attack power and magic attack power.
